The Souillac jazz festival in 2019

Souillac en jazz is a festival that has existed for 43 years in the form of an association that depends on volunteers and partnerships with both the public and private sectors. The town, the local and regional authorities and a number of actors in the Dordogne Valley and the wider region of Occitanie all provide essential support which enables it to continue.

Souillac en jazz also has a national and European dimension. In 2017 it featured in a film produced by one of the French national TV channels about one of its star musicians, the saxophone player Emile Parisien, who won an award in the national Jazz Victories ceremony that year. The festival was also given prominence in a documentary filmed, partly in Souillac, by the Franco-German TV channel Arte on the life of the accordionist Vincent Peirani, another acclaimed musician who has performed at the festival on several occasions.

In 2018 the association joined a wider grouping of no fewer than 73 European distribution networks working to promote programmes with a deliberate focus on a militant and progressive view of contemporary, creative jazz whose purpose chimes with assertive cultural projects.

In 2019, the festival is working with Jazz Migration, a unique body whose objective is to help new musicians achieve a breakthrough on the French jazz scene. This year the festival is inviting its public to discover the trio Three Days of Forest.

Souillac en jazz, in reaching out to a loyal audience with an inquiring mind and by showcasing original music and musicians, contributes to the social development of the region through the economic spinoff generated by the festival.

This year’s programme will certainly draw several thousand visitors: the Alain Bruel/Michel Marre/François Thuillier trio will be performing in the fabulous setting of the caves at Lacave; the evening concerts on the abbey square in Souillac will feature the astonishing Andreas Schaerer, named as best international vocalist at the Echo Jazz Awards and awarded the Jazz Magazine prize for “revelation of the year” in 2015; Henri Texier with his immediately recognisable melodies and music which thrill his audiences; and Avishai Cohen, at the height of his art as a double bass player, who will be regaling us with his new trio. All this, together with twenty or so free concerts including Cavale at Pinsac, the Jazzepheen trio at Miers/Alvignac, Le Lot de Jazz,Filibusters, Les Tire-bouchons and the Bismut-Minardi Chamber Jazz trio will make for a week of jazz in Souillac.
