A Lucienne et Sim Copans.

Ce jazz, aux îles d’or ensoleillées.

En cette année de centenaire de Sim Copans, dont le festival porte le nom et à qui nous rendrons hommage par diverses manifestations, je souhaite remercier le public et tous nos partenaires publics comme privés qui nous accompagnent et nous font confiance depuis 1976 où Sim et quelques amis, comme Jean Calvel ont « lancé » cette aventure.

A cette occasion je souhaite faire miens ces mots de Sim Copans : "Le jazz est une fenêtre ouverte qui absorbe toutes les musiques et en fait son propre matériau".

Après les chants d'Afrique du sud, les musiques d'Inde ou du Japon, après les influences du Moyen-orient ou du Maghreb, nous accueillerons en 2012 pour notre 37^e édition quelques passeurs de musiques sans frontières, de musiques estivales, de musiques parfumées.

Gregory Daltin et Didier Labbé, joyeux occitans, dans un cocktail "léger", plein de fantaisie nous entraînerons des Balkans au sud de l'Afrique.

Soweto Kinch, primé une dizaine de fois, fera le pont entre bop et hip hop, en renouvelant le jazz, tout en inventant une black music du XXIe siècle. Saxophoniste alto, quand il se fait « maître de cérémonie », son rap dénonce les dérives du monde actuel comme le libéralisme débridé tout en luttant pour l'émancipation des noirs. Certains le qualifient de « mix » entre Archie Shepp et Napoleon Maddox, c’est notre cadeau à découvrir !

Joachim Kühn reviendra à Souillac pour un concert entre calme et tempête entre classique et free, aux multiples facettes, en compagnie du joueur de guembri et de oud marocain Majid Bekkas et de Ramon Lopez l'andalou, aux percussions. Le pianiste et saxophoniste alto allemand vit à Ibiza et sa riche musique cabotinera en Méditerranée, peut-être croisera-t-elle, au hasard de vagues de jazz celle de Daltin et Labbé ?

Omar Sosa, inspiré de ses origines cubaines, viendra en quintet nous donner aussi son avis sur les musiques africaine et arabe. Le pianiste, sensuel, empreint de spiritualité voyagera de la salsa à la transe vaudou, du free jazz au hip hop, en rénovateur de la culture cubaine, croisera-t-il Soweto Kinch ?

Pulcinella, quartet de musique "bleue" en ville "rose", développe une musique vivante, elle nous baladera du rock au tango, des Balkans aux musiques latines dans un cirque imaginaire, fantasque, nul doute que ces polichinelles feront que nos musiques de jazz n'auront plus de secret pour vous.

Dans la rue, le jazz sera frais, coloré, libre et enjoué, vous pourrez déguster les musiques populaires revisitées de Carlo Actis Dato et Enzo Rocco, mais aussi celles de la fanfare burlesque Djacque le notaire & les Guezmers, de Fresh jazz tissant un pont entre Django et Michael Jackson et aussi du Free du hazard où caraïbe et flamenco font bon ménage.

Venez prendre l’air du jazz à Souillac, en compagnie de nos partenaires et de nos bénévoles qui vous proposent de vous laisser séduire par ces musiques toujours plus bleues, toujours plus belles.

The jazz of golden islands bathed in light.

This year, which marks the centenary of the birth of Sim Copans after whom the festival is named and to whom we will pay tribute in a number of events, I should like to thank the general public and all our sponsors from both the public and private sectors who have given us their support and placed their confidence in us since 1976 when Sim and a few friends including Jean Calvel embarked on this adventure.

On this occasion I wish to reiterate what Sim Copans himself said: “Jazz is an open window which lets in all the different strands of music and then makes something of its own out of them”.

In previous festivals we have heard the songs of South Africa, music from India and Japan and strains of the Middle East and the Maghreb. In 2012, for our 37th festival, we are giving the floor to instrumentalists who will be playing music which knows no limits, music for the summer, music with a fragrance.

Gregory Daltin and Didier Labbé, a merry duo of Occitan origin, will be taking us on a journey from the Balkans to southern Africa in a series of light-hearted and imaginative pieces.

Soweto Kinch, who has received no fewer than ten awards, will bridge the gap between bop and hip hop by bringing a fresh approach to jazz and at the same time inventing black music for the 21st century. When he plays his alto saxophone in his role of “master of ceremonies” his rapping is both a censure of today’s world with its unbridled liberalism and part of the campaign for black emancipation. He is sometimes described as a mix between Archie Shepp and Napoleon Maddox – such is the treat in store!

Joachim Kühn will be returning to Souillac for a multi-facetted concert straddling the calm and the storm and ranging between classical music and free style jazz. He will be accompanied by the Moroccan instrumentalist Majid Bekkas playing the oud and guembri and by Ramon Lopez, the Andalusian percussionist. The German pianist and alto saxophonist lives in Ibiza and his flamboyant music will take us on a trip through the Mediterranean. Could it be that this will lead to a chance encounter with the music of Daltin and Labbé?

Omar Sosa, drawing on his Cuban origins, will be playing in a quintet and will also be giving us his interpretation of African and Arab music. The pianist, both sensual and spiritual, will journey from the salsa to the voodoo trance, from free jazz to hip hop. As a musician pushing to revive Cuban culture, will he have anything in common with Soweto Kinch?

Pulcinella (Italian for the puppet character Punch) is a “blues” quartet from the “pink” town of Toulouse. The band plays lively music ranging from rock to tango and will take us from Balkan to Latin musical traditions in an imaginary circus of fantasy. You can be sure that these Punch-like artists will see to it that the jazz on offer holds no secrets for you.

In the streets the jazz will be refreshing, colourful, free and cheerful. You will be able to enjoy a revival of popular music performed by Carlo Actis Dato and Enzo Rocco, listen to the comical fanfares of Djacque le notaire & les Guezmers, hear Fresh Jazz forge a link between Django and Michael Jackson and appreciate the successful mix of Caribbean and flamenco in the music of Free du hazard.
