La 4ème orientation de la charte : "Doter le pays d'une nouvelle approche culturelle" marque la volonté de contribuer au développement de la culture, en tant que vecteur social. Notre association a pris part à la rédaction du projet culturel autour de quatre grands axes : - Renforcer les relations entre les acteurs culturels, leurs productions et les habitants. - Favoriser la médiation culturelle à destination des publics ciblés. - Encourager les liens entre patrimoine et les autres champs culturels. - Accompagner les intercommunalités dans la mise en place de politiques culturelles. Il nous a paru essentiel de faire partie des premiers projets du Pays afin, comme aimait à le dire Sim Copans, de rapprocher deux des fleuves du jazz : le Mississippi et la Dordogne, et d'aller au devant des habitants en milieu rural. C’est dans ce même esprit que, de retour à Toulouse, Lier rencontre le saxophoniste Hervé Rousseaux. La combinaison des 3 se fait naturellement lors d’une tournée en France l’été 2011. L’originalité du son et des improvisations du souffleur et la légèreté rythmique du batteur s’emboitent de façon presque magique sur les compositions de l’organiste.  On les retrouve en trio au festival Jazz à Juan, ainsi qu’au festival Bo Mélange et  dans divers clubs de la région toulousaine. Leur tournée d’été débouche sur l’enregistrement de l’album  « from roots to extensions »   <a class='descriptif_a' alt='lien exterieur' target='_blank' href="http://christophelier.com/fr/musique/musique.php" target="_blank">Christophe LIER</a>, pianiste et organiste français est né à Suresnes en 1961. Une passion pour le jazz dès l’age de 10 ans l’amène à finalement à abandonner ses cours de piano classique pour  des lessons avec Michel Sardaby. Il part habiter à Hong Kong en 1994 où il joue un rôle majeur dans la vie Jazziste de la ville. Son trio est programmé régulièrement pendant 5 années au Hong Kong Jazz club. Il se produit au Hong Kong Art Center Blues festival (1997) et au festival « jazz to kill » en 1998, effectue 2 tournées avec la légende du saxophone ténor Hal Singer (1998,1999) avec qui il rejoue en 2003 au festival off d’Antibes-Juan-les-Pins. En 2004, il effectue également en Corée, Malaisie et Taiwan, la tournée Henessy XO Jazz. Après 22 années passées en Asie il revient s’installer en France, à Toulouse, et participe au festival off de Marciac en 2009, 2010, Jazz a Juan 2011.   Né en 1957,  Hervé Rousseaux découvre la flûte à bec sur les bancs de l'Elementary School de Glassboro,NJ aux Etats-Unis, le Jazz et les orchestres lors de son retour sur le paquebot France. Il étudie en France successivement la clarinette, les saxophones alto ténor et soprano puis la flûte puis le sax midi (en autodidacte).  On l'entend au festival de Paris au théatre du Chatelet aux cotés de <a class='descriptif_a' alt='lien exterieur' target='_blank' href="http://www.jmpilc.com/" target="_blank">Jean-Michel Pilc</a> et de son Big-One (Belmondo Bros, Enrico Rava, Marc Ducret, Tony Rabeson …), aux festivals de Marciac, de Souillac,  aux festivals d'Albi, de Montauban, de Toulouse, ainsi que dans de nombreux clubs de la région Toulousaine, en compagnie de Philippe Renault, Pierre Abbo, Claude Egea, Pierre Dayraud, Philippe Laudet, Magali Pietri, Dédé Sutre, Fred Favarel…Ses influences englobent, Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Buddy de Franco, Dexter Gordon, Hubert Laws … Son top3 des musiciens est Jean Sebastien Bach, John Coltrane et Stevie Wonder. Le percussioniste et batteur Jimmy Biala, originaire de San Fransisco est né en 1959 Depuis vingt ans, il parcourt en tant que musicien et professeur de percussions, le Mexique, le Brésil, Cuba, l’Allemagne, le Canada, la Corée du Sud, Taiwan et la Chine. Il participe également à un grand nombre de  projets  en musique Créative tels que le « Search Five Project » qui combine poésie, musique et danse. A Pékin, il est directeur artistique de Sambasia Beijing, première école de Samba ( musique et danse ) de Chine. Depuis son arrivée en Asie, il collabore aux différents projets musicaux  du pianiste Christophe Lier avec qui il joue également en France, au festival off de Marciac en Aout 2009. Etudes primaires, secondaires et universitaires à Paris. Anthropologue et sociologue, spécialiste de l'Afrique noire. Recherches de terrain en Côte d'Ivoire et au Sénégal  (La confrérie islamique des Mourides, classes ouvrières et entrepreneurs nationaux). Directeur d'un centre de recherche des Affaires étrangères à Nairobi (Kenya) dans les années 1980 et expériences de coopération universitaire en Afrique orientale et australe (Afrique du sud). Chef de travaux puis maître-assistant à l'Ecole des Hautes Etudes en sciences sociales (1970-1990) puis Professeur de sociologie à l'Université de Picardie Jules Verne et à l'Université Paris Descartes (1990-2008). A enseigné aux Etats-Unis et au Québec. Co-fondateur de la revue Politique africaine en 1980 et directeur de collections aux éditions F. Maspéro, Le Sycomore et Karthala. Il aspirait à faire découvrir la culture américaine, essentiellement à travers la musique. Il parcourut également les routes de France et effectua nombre de conférences en Afrique noire et au Maghreb. Pour le festival de jazz de Souillac, il fut déclencheur ; sa conférence, à Souillac en 1975, a été le terreau sur lequel est née l’association. L’influence de Sim Copans sur le festival est toujours perceptible aujourd’hui : les racines africaines du jazz, les mélanges de cultures, la conviction que le jazz est une musique populaire restent les jalons de chaque programmation. La commémoration du centenaire de la naissance de Sim Copans est, pour le festival qui porte son nom, l’occasion de propager l’oeuvre trop peu connue de ce propagateur de jazz. Homme de radio, Sim Copans écrivait énormément : une partie de ses textes est conservée dans le « Fonds Sim Copans » à la bibliothèque municipale de Souillac. Ces documents constituent une ressource rare de connaissances du jazz et de la musique américaine. Constituée essentiellement à partir des documents conservés dans le fonds Sim Copans à la bibliothèque municipale de Souillac, l’exposition offre un parcours chronologique de la vie de Sim Copans avec des haltes sur les temps forts de son chemin de transmetteur. Faire découvrir la culture américaine a toujours été son aspiration, l’objet de son travail universitaire et l’origine de ses choix professionnels. En utilisant ses propres textes, des coupures de presse, des lettres, des articles, l’exposition montre comment il tenait à collecter et à diffuser tout ce qui permet de transmettre aux Français des éléments de la culture américaine. Grâce à ses transcriptions méticuleuses de préparation de ses émissions de radio, des reconstitutions pourront être écoutées. Des amis, des musiciens, des hommes de radio ont accepté de parler de Sim Copans ; ils ont été filmés et une vidéo diffusée au sein de l’exposition donne son et image aux témoignages d’aujourd’hui. Sans aucune nostalgie, l’exposition veut mettre en lumière une oeuvre trop restée dans l’ombre. He was born in England to a Barbadian father and a British-Jamaican mother and his music talks of Birmingham, its vandalised and neglected suburbs, its hopes and its colourful Caribbean accents. His concert entitled “The New Emancipation” combines instrumental pieces with vocal sketches in a complex mix that is both powerful and convincing. Older work songs are the basis for the instrumental melodies which are highly be-bop. The clear, arresting sound of the saxophone introduces the narrative which is developed in the texts of the songs. Soweto Kinch slams, raps and criticises – sometimes in a frenzy of rage, sometimes with caustic humour – abuse in the world of finance, unbridled liberalism and a compartmentalised music industry trying to lay claim to protest music. Above all, he takes up the torch of the Black Music revolt against the condition of black people, against injustices that are the legacy of slavery – a wound that has still not healed. With its rap rhythm and deliberately rough style, Soweto Kinch’s music captivates and convinces. The tonic, joyous and swinging notes he produces on his saxophone are reminiscent of Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane and his music is a throwback to Jimi Hendrix and Max Roach. The inspiration and mastery of this young artist shine through a range of styles from bop to jazz fusion, guided by his intentions and energetic flair. The combination of jazz and rap traps the force that powers the fight for emancipation, channelling it into a culture that is resolutely forward-looking: “I do not talk about race but about culture. A culture that is constantly changing and which bears the weight of history. Believe me, this tradition is still alive and I am its child. Friday 20 July 2012 at 21.15 Place Pierre Betz – Souillac Enjoy Chalaba The German pianist Joachim Kühn, the Moroccan singer Majid Bekkas who also plays the oud and guembri and the Spanish percussionist Ramon Lopez will be taking us on a journey across the Mediterranean to the land of the Gnawa and trans-Saharan Africa. Joachim Kühn, inspired by his musical partnership with Ornette Coleman, likes taking risks and combines an avant-gardist style of jazz with traditional eastern and African music. It therefore comes as no surprise that he has brought together the many-facetted culture of Majid Bekkas with that of Ramon Lopez, a percussionist with an enthusiasm for flamenco and Indian music, to create a leaderless trio. The three musicians transcend melodies in their common quest for a trance-like state, a condition of sensual pleasure which is based on repetitive, almost obsessional phrasing and whose aim is to transport, transform and transfigure. The concert is also a journey with “Chalaba”, a core Gnawa song, at its centre. It is given expression in the traditional vocal manner by Majid Bekkas playing his guembri and is transposed into the world of jazz by Joachim Kühn who gives it a measured rhythmic beat. On this journey there are a number of musical stopovers that conjure up other emotions and impressions: reggae in “Enjoy”, flamenco in “Asmaa”, lyricism and meditation influenced by the tablas and Gnawi spirituality, joy, dance and last but not least modernity, born of tradition and a desire to venture into new territory. The time has come for us to listen attentively, to let our gaze rest on one of the artists and to marvel at the inventiveness of the dialogues between the guembri and the drums, at the natural grace of fingers energetically striking or gently stroking the keys of the piano, at the resonance produced by the membranes stretched across the instruments, at the teasing of a beat or at other moving sounds. And then to let the poetry of it all carry us away. Saturday 21 July 2012 at 21.15 Place Pierre Betz – Souillac Free jazz, free Africa The Cuban pianist and composer Omar Sosa can be described as an unusual but visionary musician whose distinctive style derives from his quest for the musical legacy of the African diaspora whose components have been scattered around the world over the centuries. He follows in the footsteps of musical tradition, shows how the various strands are inter-related and how it is possible to reconcile them, to keep the sounds of Africa alive and to go on creating. Omar Sosa makes us share in his firm belief that it is possible to transcend each sound, each note, each emotion and that this not only forges a link between us but also a link with something else. Swing, dance, the role of the body and spirituality, all of which give his music a soul, have a common origin in the confiscated Africa of slaves. In Omar Sosa’s inspired music, in his rhythms and his daring, cultures are reconciled and languages (Yoruba, Arabic, English, Spanish and Portuguese) co-exist. Instruments from a range of horizons come together. His connivance with jazz is borrowed from the music of pianists such as Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Chick Korea and Keith Jarrett and from the bop harmonies of Charlie Parker, the spiritualist threnodies of John Coltrane and above all from the highly personal style of Thelonious Monk. On stage every performer has his own profile and aura: Leandro Saint Hill’s fingers fly as he breathes life into his saxophone, the smiling giant double-bass player Childo Tomas, gives the music its structure, the percussionist Marque Gilmore seeks perfection on his drums, Joo Kraus introduces a note of understated emotion on his trumpet and Omar Sosa hammers out his music on his piano and his Fender Rhodes. Serenity and spirituality are key components in this quintet and are developed to the full: sometimes the music explodes and becomes delirious, taking possession of Sosa and dragging him into a dizzy whirl - a visionary in a frenzied dance. “Afreecanos”, a kaleidoscopic, open-ended concept dedicated to the gods of the Afro-Cuban Santeria religion and to the freedom of jazz, brings different cultures together in a new style of music imbued with benign spirituality. Programme of daytime concerts during the 37th festival From Wednesday afternoon till Sunday, four groups of jazz musicians will be playing in different venues in the streets of Souillac and in some nearby villages. Some of these groups hold great promise and there is every reason to believe that in a few years’ time they will be performing in major events. This is particularly true of the FDH (Free du hazard) trio for which we have great expectations. Others are more experienced and already have established careers. This is the case of Carlo Actis Dato and Enzo Rocco who will be playing as a duo. And then there will be new faces such as the whimsical Djacque le Notaire and les Guezmers who will be strolling around the town and Fresh Jazz, a guitar and saxophone duo who will be revisiting pop and gypsy or manouche music in a very refined and jazz-like manner. From Tuesday 5 to Saturday 9 June 2012: “Sim Copans at 100 in the Valley” In 2012 we are celebrating the Centenary of the birth of Sim Copans, one of the founders in 1976 of the Festival which has borne his name since 1985. Sim Copans is one of the main architects of the link between American and French culture. He translated the works of the French writer and poet Louis Aragon and introduced the United States to Jean Paul Sartre. He set up the Institute of American Studies and the Franklin Roosevelt Library in Paris and was instrumental in creating the first chair of the American language at the Sorbonne. As a public radio presenter from 1946 onwards he brought American music into French homes and over a 30-year period hosted no fewer than 4000 programmes including “Panorama of American jazz” and “Negro spirituals”. “Jazz in the Valley” – organised by the Association of the “Sim Copans” Souillac Jazz Festival as part of the local cultural programme of the Valley of the Dordogne in the Lot – will feature a creation entitled: “Sim Copans at 100 in the Valley” Performances will take place in Souillac on 5 June, Sousceyrac on 6 June, Cressensac on 7 June, Prudhomat on 8 June and Rocamadour on 9 June. “A disciplined extravaganza” is the catchword for this zany and virtuoso group of musicians and comedians who have combined their versatility and buffoonery in the cause of Universal Knowledge. Oozing competence and eccentricity, <a class='descriptif_a' alt='lien exterieur' target='_blank' href="FR/1,4_347_les_experts.html">Les Experts</a> address all sorts of historical and topical themes in their music, often outrageously mixing facts, controversy and ridicule, and deliberately making themselves a laughing stock in the process! They specialise in pavement lectures. After strolling around Souillac with “Répertoire à la Monk” a few years ago, Les Experts are back again, this time to perform in the concert hall in a tribute to Sim Copans whom they describe as a “jazz benefactor”. An epic musical lecture on the trail of our American friend Sim Copans on a journey from the Mississippi to the Dordogne via the Normandy beaches. He translated the works of the French writer and poet Louis Aragon and introduced the United States to Jean Paul Sartre. He set up the Institute of American Studies and the Franklin Roosevelt Library in Paris and was instrumental in creating the first chair of the American language at the Sorbonne. As a public radio presenter from 1946 onwards he brought American music into French homes and over a 30-year period hosted no fewer than 4000 programmes including “Panorama of American jazz” and “Negro spirituals”. “Jazz in the Valley” – organised by the Association of the “Sim Copans” Souillac Jazz Festival as part of the local cultural programme of the Valley of the Dordogne in the Lot – will feature a creation entitled: “Sim Copans at 100 in the Valley” Performances will take place in Souillac on 5 June, Sousceyrac on 6 June, Cressensac on 7 June, Prudhomat on 8 June and Rocamadour on 9 June. “A disciplined extravaganza” is the catchword for this zany and virtuoso group of musicians and comedians who have combined their versatility and buffoonery in the cause of Universal Knowledge. Some of these groups hold great promise and there is every reason to believe that in a few years’ time they will be performing in major events. Joachim Kühn, nourri de son partage musical avec Ornette Coleman, aime le risque et navigue dans une combinaison du langage jazz d’avant-garde et des musiques traditionnelles orientales et africaines. Il n’est donc pas étonnant qu’il s’allie les multiples facettes de la culture de Majid Bekkas et celle du batteur adepte de flamenco et de musique indienne Ramon Lopez et constitue un trio sans leader. Unis par la recherche de la transe, cet état de jouissance qui se fonde sur le répétitif et l’obsessionnel pour trans-porter, trans-former, trans-figurer, les trois musiciens transcendent les mélodies. Le concert est aussi un voyage, avec en son centre « Chalaba », morceau du patrimoine gnawi, exposé de manière traditionnelle par la voix et le guembri de Majid Bekkas et embarqué dans l’univers jazz de Joachim Kühn, imprégné par la sobriété des rythmes frappés. D’autres escales en d’autres musiques, en d’autres émotions jalonnent le périple : le reggae dans « Enjoy », le flamenco dans « Asmaa », le lyrisme et la méditation sous l’influence des tablas et de la spiritualité gnawi, l’entrain, la joie et la danse, la modernité enfin, fille des éruditions et du goût de l’exploration. Il est alors temps de tendre l’oreille, de bloquer le regard sur l’un d’eux et de s’émerveiller de l’inventivité des dialogues guembri-batterie, de la grâce naturelle, convulsive ou apaisante des doigts sur le piano, de la résonance des peaux, de l’espièglerie d’un frappé ou des sonorités émouvantes. Né en Angleterre d’un père barbadien et d’une mère britannico-jamaïcaine,  il raconte Birmingham, ses quartiers délaissés, dégradés, ses espoirs, sa couleur sonore caribéenne. Le spectacle « The new emancipation » assemble morceaux instrumentaux et chantés dans un savant puzzle qui leur donne puissance et conviction. D’anciens « work songs » fondent les mélodies instrumentales, fortement be-bop. Le son limpide et vif du saxophone amorce le fil narratif qui sera développé dans les textes. Soweto Kinch slame, rappe et dénonce, avec rage ou avec un humour piquant, les dérives des rapports à l’argent, du libéralisme débridé et de l’industrie musicale cloisonnée qui tente de récupérer la musique contestataire ; et surtout il reprend le flambeau de la révolte de la Black Music, contre la condition des noirs, contre les injustices héritées de l’esclavage, plaie qui n’est toujours pas refermée. Rappée, volontairement râpeuse, la musique de Soweto Kinch captive et convainc ; tonique, joyeux, swinguant, le saxophone de Soweto Kinch revendique Wayne Shorter et John Coltrane et sa musique l’ascendance de Jimi Hendrix et Max Roach. Omar Sosa donne à partager la certitude que chaque son, chaque note, chaque émotion est transcendée et nous relie entre nous et à autre chose. Le swing, la danse, le rapport au corps, la spiritualité, qui donnent son âme à la musique, ont une origine commune, l’Afrique confisquée des esclaves. Joachim Kühn, inspired by his musical partnership with Ornette Coleman, likes taking risks and combines an avant-gardist style of jazz with traditional eastern and African music. It therefore comes as no surprise that he has brought together the many-facetted culture of Majid Bekkas with that of Ramon Lopez, a percussionist with an enthusiasm for flamenco and Indian music, to create a leaderless trio. The three musicians transcend melodies in their common quest for a trance-like state, a condition of sensual pleasure which is based on repetitive, almost obsessional phrasing and whose aim is to transport, transform and transfigure. The concert is also a journey with “Chalaba”, a core Gnawa song, at its centre. It is given expression in the traditional vocal manner by Majid Bekkas playing his guembri and is transposed into the world of jazz by Joachim Kühn who gives it a measured rhythmic beat. On this journey there are a number of musical stopovers that conjure up other emotions and impressions: reggae in “Enjoy”, flamenco in “Asmaa”, lyricism and meditation influenced by the tablas and Gnawi spirituality, joy, dance and last but not least modernity, born of tradition and a desire to venture into new territory. The time has come for us to listen attentively, to let our gaze rest on one of the artists and to marvel at the inventiveness of the dialogues between the guembri and the drums, at the natural grace of fingers energetically striking or gently stroking the keys of the piano, at the resonance produced by the membranes stretched across the instruments, at the teasing of a beat or at other moving sounds. He follows in the footsteps of musical tradition, shows how the various strands are inter-related and how it is possible to reconcile them, to keep the sounds of Africa alive and to go on creating. Omar Sosa makes us share in his firm belief that it is possible to transcend each sound, each note, each emotion and that this not only forges a link between us but also a link with something else. Swing, dance, the role of the body and spirituality, all of which give his music a soul, have a common origin in the confiscated Africa of slaves. In Omar Sosa’s inspired music, in his rhythms and his daring, cultures are reconciled and languages (Yoruba, Arabic, English, Spanish and Portuguese) co-exist. Instruments from a range of horizons come together. S’il n’y avait alors pas de chaine « exclusive », il y avait beaucoup d’émissions sur de nombreuses stations ce qui garantissait un pluralisme d’expression qui, aujourd’hui, laisse rêveur. Le rôle de Sim Copans aura été celui de la vulgarisation des musiques d’Amérique au long de sa longue carrière radiophonique animant sur les ondes françaises « Panorama du Jazz Américain », « Jazz en Liberté », « Fleuve Profond ». Le mercredi, en 1964, il passe sur Inter Jeunesse (« Jazz dans la Nuit ») juste avant Hugues Panassié (« Jazz Panorama »). Il ne peut être rattaché à la rigueur du pionnier des critiques car dans le même temps sur la même station, il propose le samedi un programme « Folklore et Blues », c'est-à-dire une conception « sans frontière » qui le rapprocherait plutôt d’un Alan Lomax. La station en question devient, la même année, ORTF-France Inter et le jeudi, Sim Copans propose « Negro Spirituals et Gospels » où là aussi il n’est pas dans la ligne des puristes puisqu’il présentera aussi bien Mahalia Jackson que Marian Anderson rejetée par les fanatiques d’une idée cohérente mais fabriquée de l’expressivité noire américaine. Déjà on peut souligner l’apport de Sim Copans qui fut de même l’accent sur le blues, le spiritual et le gospel bien moins documenté et connu à cette époque que le surmédiatisé jazz (quantitativement sinon qualitativement). Mais Sim Copans n’est pas un organisateur comme Charles Delaunay ni un écrivain théoricien comme Hugues Panassié. Pourtant à cette époque, nous avons été frappé par un texte de lui où il démontre, en ce temps là, une culture au dessus de la moyenne : il s’agit de la préface à Le Monde du Blues de Paul Oliver (édition Arthaud, 1962). Sim Copans est né à Stamford dans le Connecticut en 1912. Il raconte ses débuts pour Jazz Hot (mars 1965) : « Je suis venu au jazz d’une façon très détournée, comme beaucoup d’Américains. J’ai vécu dans une petite ville et mon premier contact avec le jazz c’était…juste après la première guerre mondiale … c’était un petit ensemble de quatre musiciens, des Blancs, des fils d’amis de ma famille, ils jouaient des copies de dixieland…Mais je crois qu’il faut bien dire que tous les Américains ne connaissent pas, tous les Américains n’aiment pas le jazz ». Etudiant à la Brown University, un de ses professeurs le pousse à venir en France en 1932. Il reviendra en France en 1938 pour sa thèse, « perception française de la démocratie américaine sous le second empire ». C’est chez Gallimard à cette époque qu’il rencontre Lucienne Godiard qu’il épouse. Copans a fréquenté l’Université de Nancy et la Sorbonne. Le couple rentre aux Etats-Unis et Sim Copans enseigne le Français à la Columbia University de New York. Il a déjà une passion : « Quand je suis allé à l’Université, j’aimais les grands noms, mais ce qu’on préférait c’était Tommy Dorsey, Bing Crosby. Je suis venu au jazz assez tard, c’est la vérité, je connaissais mieux le spiritual, le folklore. Je suis venu au jazz au moment où la plupart des gens commençaient à concentrer leurs goûts sur la musique classique. Je peux nommer une date importante : en 1943, à Carnegie Hall, Duke Ellington a fêté ses vingt années de jazz. Il y avait des chefs d’orchestres symphoniques, Benny Goodman, beaucoup de gens importants… Duke joua Black, Brown and Beige, ce fut extraordinaire… Et là le jazz est devenu pour moi quelque chose de très important ». En pleine guerre, il décide d’aller à Londres pour participer à la lutte contre le nazisme. Membre de la « Psychological warfare », il débarque en juin 1944 en Normandie avec le grade de capitaine. On lui donne un rôle puisqu’il parle français : rassurer les populations par sa voix diffusées depuis les haut-parleurs d’un camion équipé en « studio ». Il ne tarde pas à diffuser aussi des disques de musiques américaines pour les GI. « Je me suis trouvé tout à coup forcé d’aider les jeunes Français à savoir ce qu’était la musique américaine et j’ai dû étudier, apprendre ce qu’était une musique que je connaissais mal. Je suis arrivé en France avec un doctorat ès lettres mais pas un doctorat ès jazz !... A la Libération, Sim Copans devient délégué de La Voix de l’Amérique. A partir de 1946, il est invité comme intervenant étranger et grâce à sa discothèque, dans l’émission de Paul Gilson Ce Soir en France (tour du monde autour d’une table) au micro de la Radio française. Sim Copans fait venir son épouse et leur fils. En janvier 1947 c’est la création de Paris Inter et on lui confie la première émission : ainsi naît « Panorama du Jazz Américain » diffusé le samedi entre 12 et 13 heures. « Ce qui m’a intéressé au début, c’était l’origine du jazz, ce que ça représentait, son rôle dans la civilisation américaine, ce que ça pouvait donner en dehors des Etats-Unis. Je n’avais pas tellement de succès, à mes débuts ; je peux rappeler ici, sans rancune, qu’il y a eu un peu de réticence de la part de certains…un critique français éminent n’était pas très content de mes premières émissions, c’était en 46, 47, le « Panorama du Jazz Américain ». J’essayais de présenter un panorama peut-être pas assez strict pour le jazz… Et j’ai été accusé dans un magazine qui s’appelait Jazz Hot par un nommé André Hodeir ; il a dit que ce n’était pas une émission de jazz et que je ne savais pas très bien de quoi je parlais ». Jusqu’en 1973, Sim Copans animera plus de 4000 émissions. Sim Copans a aussi animé des conférences dès les années 1950, en France et en Afrique. En 1963, le couple Copans achète une ferme à Lanzac. Bien sûr, pour l’UNESCO, Sim Copans donne une conférence à Souillac, « de la côte des esclaves à la Nouvelle Orléans ». L’intérêt est tel que naît l’idée d’un festival de jazz à Souillac. La première mouture en juillet 1976 présente Marie Knight et Memphis Slim, Copans reste fidèle au gospel et au blues. En tout cas la première manifestation de ce genre dans le Sud Ouest voit le jour grâce à lui.  Sim Copans, touché par le sérieux et la dimension de la passion chez les amateurs français a été le premier fin 1947 à permettre à tout amateur de venir au micro se son émission. « un certain Daniel Filipacchi est venu quatre ou cinq fois, il y a eu André Clergeat aussi, et d’autres encore ». Puis il a invité des musiciens. Il remarque : « les musiciens de jazz ne s’expriment pas tellement bien et, parfois, j’ai un peu l’impression qu’ils disent, en parlant de leur musique, ce qu’ils pensent que l’on veut qu’ils disent ». Sim Copans a fait son propre cheminement. Déjà en 1965 il affirme : « On ne sait pas exactement quel est l’apport du folklore noir africain au jazz. On ne sait même pas au fond , quel a été le rôle de la Nouvelle-Orléans ». Mais il a repéré quelque chose : « Jelly Roll, admet et prouve que ce qui a compté dans sa musique, au début, c’était le blues, la contribution noire ». Directeur de la bibliothèque Benjamin Franklin des services culturels américains, membre du conseil d'administration du centre culturel américain, fondateur de l'Institut d'Etudes Américaines sous l'égide de la New-York University, co-fondateur de l'Association des enseignants en langue américaine, il permit le développement des études américaines au sein des universités françaises jusqu'à devenir docteur honoris causa de l'Université de Nancy. Décédé en 2000, auteur de "Chansons de contestation - reflet de l'histoire américaine" en 2 volumes, auteur de nombreuses préfaces, notamment à "Mister Jelly Roll" d'Alan Lomax, rédacteur de textes de pochettes de disques, Sim Copans laisse tout au long de cette seconde moitié du XXe siècle une empreinte dans le monde français du jazz. Mais un ouvrage aussi qualifié que le New Grove Dictionary of Jazz l’ignore. Un Américain trop français peut-être. Exigeante, cette programmation sort des sentiers battus et devant la respectable abbaye romane, le public, fidèle et curieux se réjouit de nuits musicales originales. Situé en milieu rural, le Festival de jazz "<a class='descriptif_a' alt='lien exterieur' target='_blank' href="../mp_doc/Bio_SIM_COPANS.pdf" target="_blank">Sim Copans</a>" de Souillac s'inscrit dans une logique de développement et de mise en valeur d'un patrimoine. Le tissu associatif local vient en appui : appui touristique tourné vers la randonnée, la gastronomie et la découverte du patrimoine architectural, appui culturel et artistique avec le cinéma, la photographie, la peinture, la danse, la littérature et le théâtre. Depuis plus de trente ans, chaque édition se construit selon un fil conducteur. Sa programmation, qui est sa vitrine, passe pour une des plus prestigieuses. Ce sont les trois "grands" concerts qui y contribuent. Plus inaperçu dans la presse, le "off", une semaine durant, apporte la musique dans la rue, au plus près des gens. A Souillac, tout un chacun peut, pendant plusieurs jours et du matin jusqu’au soir, profiter de la musique avant d’aller savourer les "grands" concerts place Pierre-Betz. Il y a, essentiellement à Souillac, mais aussi à Pinsac et à Lachapelle-Auzac, durant cette semaine, près de quarante heures de musique gratuite. Pour les musiciens du "off" jouer dans la rue est un défi qu’ils relèvent avec enthousiasme: c’est aller à la rencontre d’un public de passage, qui n’est pas acquis de prime abord. Il faut du métier pour passer sa musique et la rencontre avec le public est le moteur de l’improvisation. D’un mot, on dira que ces musiciens transforment la rue en scène. Le "off" c’est aussi, pour l’association et ses partenaires (et, en premier lieu, la Mairie de Souillac) la possibilité d’amener la musique à celles et ceux qui ne peuvent se déplacer vers elle: le foyer logement, l’EHPAD et la crèche. Venez écouter les trois "grands" concerts de la place Pierre-Betz qui sont le fer de lance du festival de Souillac et qui participent à la renommée de la ville dans le monde de la musique. Venez aussi partager les concerts en journée qui, eux aussi, donnent à la ville pendant une semaine une âme de jazz. Ainsi, dans sa globalité, le festival s’engage dans sa mission d’amener de la culture dans un espace rural. On s’esclaffe avec eux parce qu’ils sont clowns, trublions et bien entendu musiciens. Leur spectacle est sympathiquement rigolo, carrément fantasque et s’ils improvisent en grande partie leur musique, ils improvisent aussi leurs postures. Que trois d’entre eux, Ferdinand Doumerc, Florian Demonsant et Jean-Marc Serpin adoptent quelquefois des postures volontairement bouffonnes y contribuent. Mais, fort heureusement, l’explication n’est pas là. Ça tient avant tout à la musique qu’ils proposent. Or, comment décrire l’univers musical de Pulcinella? Peut-être en avançant la figure de Ferdinand Doumerc, saxophoniste qui occupe le milieu de la scène et fait office de proue, ses instruments, avec lui, en évidence? Peut-être faut-il aussi revenir au cirque à propos duquel ils écrivent qu’ils en sont «des musiciens, privés de chapiteau, qui décident de faire entendre leur cirque sans les quilles, les ours et les cerceaux»? Et c’est bien là le point d’achoppement: un cirque sans lion? Sans clown? Sans équilibriste? Et… sans chapiteau?! En fait, c’est sous la forme de la suggestion qu’ils réussissent brillamment ce pont entre les arts. La musique est bariolée, populaire, colorée, narrative. Elle est suffisamment dansante pour que nous respirions avec eux et suffisamment étonnante pour que cette respiration soit haletante. Pas de pas de danse donc mais on est à deux doigts. La suggestion est également stylistique: elle est tango mais n’y ressemble pas; elle est rock sans en être. Elle évoque ces univers en en mélangeant des bribes. Tout est fait de touches mélodiques, rythmiques, d’éléments latents, de discrètes phrases et de sons qui rappellent l’un et qui, l’instant d’après, évoquent l’autre. Mais peut-être lui manquait-il d’explorer l’intérieur d’une grotte ? Ce sera bientôt chose faite et on peut très vraisemblablement penser que jouer de cette acoustique naturelle, confronter son écriture musicale à la configuration très spécifique des grottes sera une expérience très stimulante pour ce chercheur de sons et de mélodies. Bien sûr, cette conférence eut lieu. A-t-elle joué le rôle de déclencheur ? Toujours est-il qu'un groupe de jeunes voulut créer à Souillac un festival de jazz. <a class='descriptif_a' alt='lien exterieur' target='_blank' href="../mp_doc/Bio_SIM_COPANS.pdf" target="_blank">Sim Copans</a> était vraiment très sceptique. Il se laissa finalement convaincre et joua le jeu. Il proposa alors au maire de l'époque, Jaurès Chaudru, ce projet de festival. C'était le 11 novembre 1975. L'ensemble du conseil municipal vota à l'unanimité moins une voix (celle du maire) le projet avec 3 ou 4000 francs pour démarrer.
