The musician and painter Daniel Humair, considered to be one of the greatest drummers in the world today, has played with many of the great names in jazz: Chet Baker, Martial Solal, Stéphane Grapelli, Joachim Kühn, Eddy Louiss, Bud Powell, Eric Dolphy, Jim Hall, Anthony Braxton. For several years he has been bringing young musicians together to explore “music based on exchange” – jazz. His “New Reunion » is an impressive example of collective improvisation in which one can detect the strains of popular dance music (“musette”), with a few notes of a waltz, blues or a hint of bop and the suggestion of Middle East and folk melodies. The result is a vibrant whirl of music bursting out of this collective offering full of joy, humour and laughter and producing a new sound so that the spectator can only delight in all the surprises. Emile Parisien, a young saxophonist from the Lot, was awarded the 2012 Jazz Academy prize for best jazz musician of the year. Daniel Humair, drums Émile Parisien, sporano saxophone Vincent Peirani, accordion Jérôme Regard, bass guitar Renaud Garcia-Fons “solo” To call this concert a solo performance would be over-simplistic because Renaud Garcia-Fons transforms his double bass into a universal instrument: by using a fifth string (added to the treble register), by the way he strikes and strokes the strings, uses the bow and slaps the body and also through his technique of recording musical motifs played back in loops. It would equally be over-simplistic to talk about a technical performance because the player and the double bass evoke a captivating world of musical poetry: hints at the countries of the Mediterranean and Africa, Ireland and Latin America gradually frame an imaginary journey into which we are inevitably drawn. “I want to tell stories that cannot be told using words. Travel to lands without knowing where I am going. Music holds us captive, we have no idea of where we are going but we are absorbed by something beyond our comprehension”. Classical, baroque and medieval music, jazz and rock mingle in an “imaginary journey of a double bass through time and space”. So it is time to be surprised, enchanted and to let ourselves be carried away in a stream of light. Welcome to the world of pure poetry. Michel Portal / Vincent Peirani duo Michel Portal, clarinettist, bandoneon player (a sort of concertina) and saxophonist, enjoys creating music with instrumentalists from all walks of life. In Souillac, he has already delighted spectators playing with Andy Emler, François Moutin, Daniel Humair and accordionist Richard Galliano, and then with the latter in a duo, and also with Louis Sclavis, Bojan Z, Bruno Chevillon and Eric Echampard. Vincent Peirani, a young accordionist, who studied classical clarinet, likes dabbling in variety and also contemporary music. His speciality lies in contrasts and creating a surprise but he also plays in a more classicalstyle, boldly mixing art and popular music in a whirlwind of sound. The magic of this duo lies in laying bare our emotions. Each concert is a surprise – something between jazz and popular music, music which appeals. The fabric of sound is extremely melodic and can be either poetic and delicate or joyous and rhythmic. Reminiscent of lacework, the sounds we hear are exquisite – they join to form a knot, blending boldness born of virtuosity with the more traditional sounds to which we are accustomed. Michel Portal, bass clarinet, clarinet Vincent Peirani, accordion Roberto Fonseca “yo” Roberto Fonseca is a pianist and a Cuban. In his performance entitled “Yo” he assets this dual identity in many different ways: a pianist, his fingers fly across several different keyboards – the Fender Rhodes, the Hammond organ and the piano; as a Cuban, influenced by African culture and the beat of the Caribbean, he is marked by the spirituality of the Cuban Santería religion. Robert Fonseca was a pianist in the Buena Vista Social Club from 2001 to 2004. He was intrigued by avant-garde urban music, somewhere between hip-hop and electro. In “Yo” (meaning “I”) he returns to the African roots of jazz and Cuban music. With his sextet, Roberto Fonseca builds bridges linking Gnawa and Yoruba rhythms – the foundations of African music – to the Caribbean Islands. Intent on exploring a world of sound which fascinates him and mixing music based on Afro-Latin rhythms with soul and jazz, he develops the concept of a union between electronic and traditional African instruments. A simple yet captivating melody combined with Latino overtones and a dance-like frenzy result in a summer celebration. “Yo”, the pianist’s latest CD, was ranked No. 1 in the Jazz News 2012 Top Ten. At times his music reveals the hidden depths of his memory – black American jazz which in the Sixties enthused audiences in the basement cellars of Paris and in Seville and Toulouse. Sharing music has been his purpose in life for over thirty years. He founded the first school of Andalusian jazz and still teaches in Toulouse. Today he brings his wealth of musical experience – in which we can sometimes detect the style of his former companions Johnny Copeland, Billy Hart, Slide Hampton or Ellis Marsalis – into contact with the energy and inventiveness of five young musicians from Toulouse. In 2013, the music at the festival will be multicultural. We shall be welcoming the following musicians: Roberto FONSECA (best CD of the year in 2012 for Jazz News) who regales audiences with his mystical influences and Afro-Cuban grooves and with the interplay between his four Cuban accompanists and the Malian kora player, Cherif Soumano; Renaud GARCIA-FONS who, by changing moods to widen the spectrum of the double bass, even with its five strings, makes his instrument sing, using sound loops. We shall be accompanying him on his journey and there is no doubt that the Abbey, a magical backdrop, will inspire him to create a sensation. In Souillac we have enjoyed giving the stage to new talented musicians for a number of years now. In 2013, when older and younger generations in France are being encouraged to work together in preparation for passing the torch, up-and-coming musicians will be presented by their established elders, and all of them will doubtless come up with surprises and arouse curiosity. Daniel HUMAIR will present his new quartet, with Jérôme Regard on the double bass, Emile Parisien , the gifted saxophonist from the Lot who studied jazz at secondary school in Marciac, (winner of the Jazz Academy prize for the best French jazz musician in 2012) and Vincent Peirani playing the accordion. This group is one of the drummer’s most successful partnerships, unanimously acclaimed by the press (Humair being one of the best artists with some of the best discs in 2012 for Jazz Magazine / Jazzman, and others). The quartet produces the genuine sound of an orchestra oscillating between the traditional and the modern – a real treat. Michel PORTAL likes a challenge by inviting a musician whom everyone is eager to engage to play with him: Vincent PEIRANI. The accordionist, who will be performing on two evenings in Souillac, will join forces with the clarinettist to play music that is at once mad, passionate and emotional. cubain, habité par l’héritage africain, par les rythmes caraïbes, il est empreint de la spiritualité de la religion cubaine santériste. Pianiste dans le Buena Vista Social Club (2001-2004), curieux des musiques urbaines avant-gardistes, entre hip-hop et électro, il trouve avec « Yo » les racines africaines du jazz et de la musique cubaine. Avec son sextet, Roberto Fonseca crée les ponts qui relient les rythmes gnawas et yorubas, musiques africaines fondatrices, à l’Amérique des Antilles. Il serait très réducteur de parler de performance technique, car l’homme et la contrebasse déploient des univers poétiques envoûtants : évocations des pays de la Méditerranée, de l’Afrique, de l’Irlande, de l’Amérique latine construisent peu à peu un voyage imaginaire qu’on ne peut pas refuser. « Je veux raconter des histoires qu’on ne peut exprimer avec des mots. Voyager vers des étendues, sans savoir lesquelles. La musique nous capture, on ne sait pas où on va, on est absorbé par quelque chose qui nous dépasse ». Musique classique, baroque, jazz, médiévale, rock se rencontrent dans « un voyage imaginaire d’une contrebasse à travers le temps et l’espace ». Le musicien et peintre Daniel Humair, considéré aujourd’hui comme un des plus grands batteurs au monde, a joué avec ceux qui sont devenus des grands noms du jazz : Chet Baker, Martial Solal, Stéphane Grapelli, Joachim Kühn, Eddy Louis. Depuis plusieurs années, il réunit de jeunes musiciens pour explorer une « musique fondée sur l’échange », le jazz. Sa « New Reunion » pratique à l’envi l’improvisation collective et propose qui un brin de musette, qui trois notes de valse, de blues ou une phrase de bop, esquisses de mélodies moyen-orientales, de mélopées folkloriques. Alors, tourbillonnante, foisonnante, la musique jaillit dans l’échange et la rencontre. Offerte toute cette joie, offerts l’humour et le rire, le goût de l’inouï, pour que le spectateur se délecte de toutes les surprises. Il a été adopté en assemblée générale, le 10 décembre 2011. Il est remis à l’ensemble des membres ainsi qu’à chaque nouvel adhérent qui signeront un reçu précisant qu'ils en ont pris connaissance et l'ont accepté. Organisation de l'association L’Association a vu le jour en 1975, une vingtaine de membres constituait le Conseil d’Administration. En 1985, le nom de Sim Copans, un de ses créateurs est adjoint au nom de l’association par la volonté de ses membres. En 36 ans, l’association s’est structurée, étoffée, responsabilisée parallèlement à la réglementation afférente à son activité. Elle tient régulièrement des réunions de l’ensemble des membres actifs disponibles hors saison et son assemblée générale ordinaire en décembre de chaque année conformément à ses statuts. Les comptes rendus sont adressés dorénavant par mail aux membres et par courrier à certains. Le trésorier est chargé des comptes, des opérations bancaires, tenue de livres, paiements, le secrétaire est chargé des procès verbaux de réunions et de l’organisation des élections notamment. Le président représente l’association auprès des élus et de certains partenaires privés et peut déléguer toute ou partie de son rôle. Il détient par ailleurs en nom propre la licence d’entrepreneur de spectacle n° 3-1040202 valable jusqu’au 22 octobre 2013, ne lui permettant pas d’avoir des salariés en interne comme en externe. Par ailleurs l’association est référencée SIRET 337 810 105 000 11 et APE 9001Z. Les modalités d’adhésion La demande d’adhésion à l’association est soumise à l’étude de la commission chargée de la gestion des bénévoles qui transmettra ses conclusions au bureau chargé de statuer. Chaque adhérent doit fournir chaque année une attestation de responsabilité civile fournie par son assureur avant le 1er juin de l’année en cours. Les membres de l’association doivent être âgés d’au moins 16 ans. Les enfants des adultes membres de l’association peuvent être associés à certaines activités sous la responsabilité exclusive de leurs parents et conformément à la législation des mineurs. Les activités Les membres de l’association &oelig;uvrent au déroulement des manifestations organisées par l’association.  Ils sont également amenés à participer à des manifestations associatives locales à d’autres périodes : forum des associations, fête de la musique, qui engagent un partenariat avec l’association. Les membres de l’association peuvent participer à des commissions selon leurs aspirations et leurs compétences. Les commissions travaillent indépendamment et rendent compte de l’avancée des travaux lors des réunions mensuelles pendant lesquelles sont prises les décisions par vote. Lors du festival sont constituées des équipes ; les responsables de chaque équipe sont réunis chaque jour pour l’organisation des tâches au quotidien. Le fonctionnement Chaque mois, les membres de l’association sont conviés à une réunion. A l’approche de la date du festival, les réunions sont plus fréquentes. La date de chaque réunion figure en fin de chaque compte rendu de la réunion précédente. Chaque membre est informé de l’ordre du jour. En cas d’absence à la réunion, il peut communiquer par écrit ses observations. Toute question non inscrite à  l’ordre du jour ne pourra être traitée au cours de la réunion où elle est posée sauf cas d’extrême urgence. Elle sera inscrite à l’ordre du jour d’une prochaine réunion. Lors de l’assemblée générale, les membres de l’association votent pour élire les membres du Conseil d’Administration. Chaque membre de l’association peut être porteur d’une seule procuration. Le Conseil d’administration élit un bureau qui ne pourra pas être composé d’élus territoriaux ni municipaux. Pour être élu au bureau, il faut être majeur. Le bureau se réunit pour traiter des questions d’ordre juridique, financier et conformément aux statuts. Il est garant de l’application du règlement intérieur. Les déplacements et remboursements sur frais Les membres de l’association peuvent être amenés à se déplacer à la demande et pour le compte de l’association. Cette dernière participe aux frais de déplacement à l’euro l’euro sur justificatif. Les membres de l’association peuvent être amenés à faire des achats à la demande et pour le compte de l’association ; ils sont remboursés à l’euro l’euro sur justificatif. Les matériels et locaux Tout membre de l’association peut utiliser le local et le matériel de l’association pour le fonctionnement de l’association. Il suffit d’en informer un membre du bureau ou le responsable « régie ». L’utilisation du matériel informatique est réservée au fonctionnement de l’association. La radiation Conformément aux statuts, un adhérent peut être exclu pour les motifs suivants : <ul> <li>dégradation de matériels</li> <li>comportement  dangereux</li> <li>comportement non conforme à l'éthique de l'association</li> <li>propos désobligeants </li> <li style="text-align: left;">non respect des statuts et du règlement intérieur</li> </ul> L'exclusion est décidée par le Conseil d'Administration suivant les modalités de l’article 7 des statuts. L’assurance L’association souscrit une assurance auprès de l’assurance Aviva, à Souillac. La liste des bénévoles est déposée auprès de l’assureur au plus tard la veille du début du festival. Chaque membre de l’association doit fournir une attestation de responsabilité civile avant le 1er juin de l’année en cours. Participation à la vie de l'association : bénévolat Le bénévolat est un acte volontaire. Article 2 Cette association a pour but d’organiser chaque année, des manifestations publiques de jazz ayant un caractère populaire dont notamment un festival de jazz pendant la saison d’été (Souillac en jazz). Article 3 – Siège social Le siège social est fixé à l’Office de Tourisme du Pays de Souillac, Boulevard Louis-Jean Malvy, Téléphone : 05 65 37 04 93. Il pourra être transféré par simple décision du conseil d’administration ; la ratification par l’assemblée générale sera nécessaire. Article 4 L’association se compose de : a)      Membres d’honneur b)      Membres bienfaiteurs c)      Membres actifs Article 5 – Admission Pour faire partie de l’association, il faut être agréé par le bureau qui statue, lors de chacune de ses réunions, sur les demandes d’admission présentées. Article 6 – Les membres Sont membres d’honneur ceux qui ont rendu des services signalés à l’association. Sont membres bienfaiteurs, les personnes qui versent un don. Sont membres actifs ceux qui participent au long de l’année ou pendant le festival aux travaux de préparation et de réalisation des manifestations désignées à l’article 2. Article 7 – Radiations La qualité de membre se perd par : a)      La démission, b)      Le décès, c)      La radiation prononcée par le conseil d’administration pour motif grave, l’intéressé ayant été invité par lettre recommandée à se présenter devant le bureau pour fournir des explications. Article 8 Les ressources de l’association comprennent : a)      Le montant des dons, b)      Les subventions des organismes publics, collectivités territoriales et locales, c)      Les recettes provenant du parrainage et du mécénat, d)      Les produits recouvrés lors des manifestations. Article 9 – Conseil d’administration L’association est dirigée par un conseil de 25 membres au maximum et de 15 au minimum, élus pour deux années par l’assemblée générale. Les membres sont rééligibles. Le conseil d’administration choisit parmi ses membres un bureau composé d’au plus : a)      Un président, b)      Deux vice-présidents, c)      Un secrétaire et un secrétaire adjoint, d)      Un trésorier et un trésorier adjoint. En cas de vacances, le conseil pourvoit provisoirement au remplacement de ses membres. Il est procédé à leur remplacement définitif par la plus prochaine assemblée générale. Les pouvoirs des membres ainsi élus prennent fin à l’époque où devrait normalement expirer le mandat des membres remplacés. Article 10 – Réunion du conseil d’administration Le conseil d’administration se réunit une fois au moins tous les 6 mois, sur convocation du président, ou sur demande du quart de ses membres. Les décisions sont prises à la majorité des voix ; en cas de partage, le voix du président est prépondérante. Tout membre du comité qui, sans excuse, n’aura pas assisté à trois réunions consécutives, pourra être considéré comme démissionnaire. Nul ne peut faire partie du conseil s’il n’est pas majeur. Article 11 – Assemblée générale ordinaire L’assemblée générale ordinaire comprend tous les membres de l’association à quelque titre qu’ils soient affiliés. L’assemblée générale ordinaire se réunit chaque année au mois de décembre. Quinze jours au moins avant la date fixée, les membres de l’association sont convoqués par les soins du secrétaire. L’ordre du jour est indiqué sur les convocations. Le président, assisté des membres du comité, préside l’assemblée et expose la situation morale de l’association. Le trésorier rend compte de sa gestion et soumet le bilan à l’approbation de l’assemblée. L’exercice comptable commence chaque année le premier décembre. Il doit être clos le 30 novembre de l’année suivante. Ne devront être traitées, lors de l’assemblée générale, que les questions soumises à l’ordre du jour. Toute décision prise par l’assemblée générale devra être votée à la majorité absolue des membres présents, ou ayant délégué leurs pouvoirs. Article 12 – Assemblée générale extraordinaire Si besoin est, ou sur la demande de la moitié plus un des membres inscrits, le président peut convoquer une assemblée générale extraordinaire, suivant les formalités prévues par l’article 11. Article 13 – Règlement intérieur Un règlement intérieur peut être établi par le conseil d’administration qui le fait alors approuver par l’assemblée générale. Ce règlement éventuel est destiné à fixer les divers points non prévus par les statuts, notamment ceux qui ont trait à l’administration interne de l’association. Il aspirait à faire découvrir la culture américaine, essentiellement à travers la musique. Il parcourut également les routes de France et effectua nombre de conférences en Afrique noire et au Maghreb. Pour le festival de jazz de Souillac, il fut déclencheur ; sa conférence, à Souillac en 1975, a été le terreau sur lequel est née l’association. L’influence de Sim Copans sur le festival est toujours perceptible aujourd’hui : les racines africaines du jazz, les mélanges de cultures, la conviction que le jazz est une musique populaire restent les jalons de chaque programmation. La commémoration du centenaire de la naissance de Sim Copans est, pour le festival qui porte son nom, l’occasion de propager l’oeuvre trop peu connue de ce propagateur de jazz. Homme de radio, Sim Copans écrivait énormément : une partie de ses textes est conservée dans le « Fonds Sim Copans » à la bibliothèque municipale de Souillac. Ces documents constituent une ressource rare de connaissances du jazz et de la musique américaine. Constituée essentiellement à partir des documents conservés dans le fonds Sim Copans à la bibliothèque municipale de Souillac, l’exposition offre un parcours chronologique de la vie de Sim Copans avec des haltes sur les temps forts de son chemin de transmetteur. Faire découvrir la culture américaine a toujours été son aspiration, l’objet de son travail universitaire et l’origine de ses choix professionnels. En utilisant ses propres textes, des coupures de presse, des lettres, des articles, l’exposition montre comment il tenait à collecter et à diffuser tout ce qui permet de transmettre aux Français des éléments de la culture américaine. Grâce à ses transcriptions méticuleuses de préparation de ses émissions de radio, des reconstitutions pourront être écoutées. Des amis, des musiciens, des hommes de radio ont accepté de parler de Sim Copans ; ils ont été filmés et une vidéo diffusée au sein de l’exposition donne son et image aux témoignages d’aujourd’hui. Sans aucune nostalgie, l’exposition veut mettre en lumière une oeuvre trop restée dans l’ombre. En 2013, contrat de génération oblige, les musiciens de la nouvelle scène seront présentés par de fins dénicheurs, tous enclins à provoquer les surprises et pousser à la curiosité. Daniel HUMAIR vient nous présenter son nouveau quartet, avec Jérôme Regard à la contrebasse, le saxophoniste surdoué lotois, issu de la classe de jazz du collège de Marciac, (prix du meilleur musicien français de jazz de l’année 2012 de l’Académie du jazz): Emile Parisien et Vincent Peirani à l’accordéon. Cette réunion est une des plus belles du batteur, saluée unanimement par toute la presse (un des artistes et disques de l’année 2012 pour Jazz Magazine / Jazzman, Culture jazz) et qui offre avec ce groupe un vrai son d’orchestre oscillant entre tradition et modernité, une vraie jubilation. Sa programmation, qui est sa vitrine, passe pour une des plus prestigieuses. Ce sont les trois "grands" concerts qui y contribuent. Plus inaperçu dans la presse, le "off", une semaine durant, apporte la musique dans la rue, au plus près des gens. A Souillac, tout un chacun peut, pendant plusieurs jours et du matin jusqu’au soir, profiter de la musique avant d’aller savourer les "grands" concerts place Pierre-Betz. Il y a, essentiellement à Souillac, mais aussi à Pinsac et à Lachapelle-Auzac, durant cette semaine, près de quarante heures de musique gratuite. Pour les musiciens du "off" jouer dans la rue est un défi qu’ils relèvent avec enthousiasme: c’est aller à la rencontre d’un public de passage, qui n’est pas acquis de prime abord. Il faut du métier pour passer sa musique et la rencontre avec le public est le moteur de l’improvisation. D’un mot, on dira que ces musiciens transforment la rue en scène. Le "off" c’est aussi, pour l’association et ses partenaires (et, en premier lieu, la Mairie de Souillac) la possibilité d’amener la musique à celles et ceux qui ne peuvent se déplacer vers elle: le foyer logement, l’EHPAD et la crèche. Venez écouter les trois "grands" concerts de la place Pierre-Betz qui sont le fer de lance du festival de Souillac et qui participent à la renommée de la ville dans le monde de la musique. Venez aussi partager les concerts en journée qui, eux aussi, donnent à la ville pendant une semaine une âme de jazz. Ainsi, dans sa globalité, le festival s’engage dans sa mission d’amener de la culture dans un espace rural. C’est dans ce même esprit que, de retour à Toulouse, Lier rencontre le saxophoniste Hervé Rousseaux. La combinaison des 3 se fait naturellement lors d’une tournée en France l’été 2011. L’originalité du son et des improvisations du souffleur et la légèreté rythmique du batteur s’emboitent de façon presque magique sur les compositions de l’organiste.  On les retrouve en trio au festival Jazz à Juan, ainsi qu’au festival Bo Mélange et  dans divers clubs de la région toulousaine. Leur tournée d’été débouche sur l’enregistrement de l’album  « from roots to extensions »   <a class='descriptif_a' alt='lien exterieur' target='_blank' href="http://christophelier.com/fr/musique/musique.php" target="_blank">Christophe LIER</a>, pianiste et organiste français est né à Suresnes en 1961. Une passion pour le jazz dès l’age de 10 ans l’amène à finalement à abandonner ses cours de piano classique pour  des lessons avec Michel Sardaby. Il part habiter à Hong Kong en 1994 où il joue un rôle majeur dans la vie Jazziste de la ville. Son trio est programmé régulièrement pendant 5 années au Hong Kong Jazz club. Il se produit au Hong Kong Art Center Blues festival (1997) et au festival « jazz to kill » en 1998, effectue 2 tournées avec la légende du saxophone ténor Hal Singer (1998,1999) avec qui il rejoue en 2003 au festival off d’Antibes-Juan-les-Pins. En 2004, il effectue également en Corée, Malaisie et Taiwan, la tournée Henessy XO Jazz. Après 22 années passées en Asie il revient s’installer en France, à Toulouse, et participe au festival off de Marciac en 2009, 2010, Jazz a Juan 2011.   Né en 1957,  Hervé Rousseaux découvre la flûte à bec sur les bancs de l'Elementary School de Glassboro,NJ aux Etats-Unis, le Jazz et les orchestres lors de son retour sur le paquebot France. Il étudie en France successivement la clarinette, les saxophones alto ténor et soprano puis la flûte puis le sax midi (en autodidacte).  On l'entend au festival de Paris au théatre du Chatelet aux cotés de <a class='descriptif_a' alt='lien exterieur' target='_blank' href="http://www.jmpilc.com/" target="_blank">Jean-Michel Pilc</a> et de son Big-One (Belmondo Bros, Enrico Rava, Marc Ducret, Tony Rabeson …), aux festivals de Marciac, de Souillac,  aux festivals d'Albi, de Montauban, de Toulouse, ainsi que dans de nombreux clubs de la région Toulousaine, en compagnie de Philippe Renault, Pierre Abbo, Claude Egea, Pierre Dayraud, Philippe Laudet, Magali Pietri, Dédé Sutre, Fred Favarel…Ses influences englobent, Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Buddy de Franco, Dexter Gordon, Hubert Laws … Son top3 des musiciens est Jean Sebastien Bach, John Coltrane et Stevie Wonder. Le percussioniste et batteur Jimmy Biala, originaire de San Fransisco est né en 1959 Depuis vingt ans, il parcourt en tant que musicien et professeur de percussions, le Mexique, le Brésil, Cuba, l’Allemagne, le Canada, la Corée du Sud, Taiwan et la Chine. Il participe également à un grand nombre de  projets  en musique Créative tels que le « Search Five Project » qui combine poésie, musique et danse. A Pékin, il est directeur artistique de Sambasia Beijing, première école de Samba ( musique et danse ) de Chine. Depuis son arrivée en Asie, il collabore aux différents projets musicaux  du pianiste Christophe Lier avec qui il joue également en France, au festival off de Marciac en Aout 2009. Il joue avec Leon Parker pendant trois ans et se perfectionne ensuite auprès de Baptiste Trotignon et Pierre de Bethmann. Il jouera dans le groupe de gospel Soulshine Voices venu à Souillac. Il est également au Inder rhodes dans le sextet Stabat Akish signé par John Zorn. Il s’est produit notamment aux festivals Jazz sur son 31, Radio-France de Montpellier, Jazzfestival in Murcia (Espagne), Millau en Jazz, Jazz en Comminges,... En hommage au centenaire de leur compatriote Sim Copans, l'un des fondateurs du Festival de jazz, l'association «Les Américains dans le Lot» travaille étroitement avec un choix de restaurants souillagais pour offrir des plats typiquement américains en plus de leurs cartes habituelles. L'association, composée d’Américains vivant dans le Lot, et fondée dans le but de promouvoir les relations américaines lotoises, aide les restaurants à choisir les plats et à décorer leurs vitrines avec des symboles des USA. Les chefs serviront des plats américains appropriés à leur propre style de cuisine, allant des plus simples mais délicieux - entrées et plats principaux - jusqu'aux plats les plus élaborés, desserts compris. Le critère clé : les plats doivent être faciles et rapides à préparer, pour que les spectateurs puissent arriver avant 21h15 à temps pour les concerts. Il est le traducteur d'Aragon, il a fait connaître Jean Paul Sartre aux EU. C'est le créateur de l'Institut d'Etudes Améraicaines et de la Bibliothèque Franklin Roosevelt à Paris et l'instigateur de la première chaire de langue américaine à la Sorbonne. Animateur, vulgarisateur des musiques américaines sur les radios de service public depuis 1946, il a animé plus de 4000 émissions en 30 ans dont "Panorama du jazz américain", "Negro spirituals",... "Le Jazz dans la Vallée" - piloté par l'Association pour le Festival de Jazz "Sim Copans" de Souillac dans le cadre  du projet culturel de territoire du Pays de la Vallée de la Dordogne lotoise - présentera à Souillac le 5 juin, Sousceyrac le 6, Cressensac le 7, Prudhomat le 8 et Rocamadour le 9 une création : "Sim Copans 100 ans dans la Vallée". "La Fantaisie dans la Rigueur !" c'est l'unique devise de cette fanfare loufoque et virtuose, constituée de musiciens-comédiens ayant choisi de mettre en commun leurs compétences et incompétences au bénéfice du Savoir Universel. Lisa distribue des flyers de Souillac en jazz qui aura lieu du 15 au 22 juillet prochain, Stéphane harangue les deux musiciens qui caquettent, Pascal invite le public à pénétrer dans la salle du Bellay pendant que Luc a déjà attaqué l'histoire du "Doodle" ! </div> <div style="text-align: justify;">Tout a continué devant plus de cent personnes qui réagissent par leur sourire, leur tapement de mains, voire même leur rire ou leurs encouragements, ça communique bien, Sim Copans est bien en nous, surtout quand Nicolas fait revivre une émission de Paris-Inter. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;">Mais avant, nous avons parcouru la Normandie avec les 6 musiciens récitants, nous étions dans le dodge avec eux. Depuis, samedi soir au Foyer rural de Rocamadour, il ne se passe pas de jour sans recevoir des témoignages de satisfaction du public, le spectacle sur Sim Copans a su séduire, au-delà de l'homme pas toujours connu, il a apporté une expertise sur l'histoire du jazz. C'est surtout le traitement alliant rigueur et humour qui a transporté les gens des guinches d'avant guerre, à la guerre et ses souffrances, de la musique d'outre-atlantique à la radio française des années 50, de l'université au festival de jazz, du Mississippi à la Dordogne. Le voisin du dessus était à sa fenêtre, on voit d'ailleurs sa lampe allumée. Ah, j'ai oublié, la tarte aux épinards du Canard qui rit, était délicieuse ! La Maison des Bons Enfants est une belle réussite ... ces bons enfants, est-ce ces treize jeunes étudiants parisiens du début du XIIIe siècle ? ou d'autres gamins des quarante lieux-dits gérés par quatre prud'hommes et deux nobles, qui ornent le pourtour de la salle ? Avant la journée de samedi, je voudrais saluer les musiciens: Nicolas Naudet à la clarinette, à l'harmonica, Lisa Cat-Berro au saxophone alto, une de nos belles musiciennes françaises dont Rhoda Scott s'entoure, Stéphane Hoarau qui joue de la guitare avec cinq doigts ! Certains groupes sont fort prometteurs et il y a de grandes chances qu'on les trouve dans quelques années sur de grandes scènes. C'est notamment le cas du <a class='descriptif_a' alt='lien exterieur' target='_blank' href="../FR/1,964_314_fdh_trio.html">FDH trio</a>, formation sur laquelle nous fondons de grands espoirs. D'autres sont plus rompus et ont déjà une carrière importante. He was born in England to a Barbadian father and a British-Jamaican mother and his music talks of Birmingham, its vandalised and neglected suburbs, its hopes and its colourful Caribbean accents. His concert entitled “The New Emancipation” combines instrumental pieces with vocal sketches in a complex mix that is both powerful and convincing. Older work songs are the basis for the instrumental melodies which are highly be-bop. The clear, arresting sound of the saxophone introduces the narrative which is developed in the texts of the songs. Soweto Kinch slams, raps and criticises – sometimes in a frenzy of rage, sometimes with caustic humour – abuse in the world of finance, unbridled liberalism and a compartmentalised music industry trying to lay claim to protest music. Above all, he takes up the torch of the Black Music revolt against the condition of black people, against injustices that are the legacy of slavery – a wound that has still not healed. With its rap rhythm and deliberately rough style, Soweto Kinch’s music captivates and convinces. The tonic, joyous and swinging notes he produces on his saxophone are reminiscent of Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane and his music is a throwback to Jimi Hendrix and Max Roach. The inspiration and mastery of this young artist shine through a range of styles from bop to jazz fusion, guided by his intentions and energetic flair. The combination of jazz and rap traps the force that powers the fight for emancipation, channelling it into a culture that is resolutely forward-looking: “I do not talk about race but about culture. A culture that is constantly changing and which bears the weight of history. Believe me, this tradition is still alive and I am its child. Friday 20 July 2012 at 21.15 Place Pierre Betz – Souillac Enjoy Chalaba The German pianist Joachim Kühn, the Moroccan singer Majid Bekkas who also plays the oud and guembri and the Spanish percussionist Ramon Lopez will be taking us on a journey across the Mediterranean to the land of the Gnawa and trans-Saharan Africa. Joachim Kühn, inspired by his musical partnership with Ornette Coleman, likes taking risks and combines an avant-gardist style of jazz with traditional eastern and African music. It therefore comes as no surprise that he has brought together the many-facetted culture of Majid Bekkas with that of Ramon Lopez, a percussionist with an enthusiasm for flamenco and Indian music, to create a leaderless trio. The three musicians transcend melodies in their common quest for a trance-like state, a condition of sensual pleasure which is based on repetitive, almost obsessional phrasing and whose aim is to transport, transform and transfigure. The concert is also a journey with “Chalaba”, a core Gnawa song, at its centre. It is given expression in the traditional vocal manner by Majid Bekkas playing his guembri and is transposed into the world of jazz by Joachim Kühn who gives it a measured rhythmic beat. On this journey there are a number of musical stopovers that conjure up other emotions and impressions: reggae in “Enjoy”, flamenco in “Asmaa”, lyricism and meditation influenced by the tablas and Gnawi spirituality, joy, dance and last but not least modernity, born of tradition and a desire to venture into new territory. The time has come for us to listen attentively, to let our gaze rest on one of the artists and to marvel at the inventiveness of the dialogues between the guembri and the drums, at the natural grace of fingers energetically striking or gently stroking the keys of the piano, at the resonance produced by the membranes stretched across the instruments, at the teasing of a beat or at other moving sounds. And then to let the poetry of it all carry us away. Saturday 21 July 2012 at 21.15 Place Pierre Betz – Souillac Free jazz, free Africa The Cuban pianist and composer Omar Sosa can be described as an unusual but visionary musician whose distinctive style derives from his quest for the musical legacy of the African diaspora whose components have been scattered around the world over the centuries. He follows in the footsteps of musical tradition, shows how the various strands are inter-related and how it is possible to reconcile them, to keep the sounds of Africa alive and to go on creating. Omar Sosa makes us share in his firm belief that it is possible to transcend each sound, each note, each emotion and that this not only forges a link between us but also a link with something else. Swing, dance, the role of the body and spirituality, all of which give his music a soul, have a common origin in the confiscated Africa of slaves. In Omar Sosa’s inspired music, in his rhythms and his daring, cultures are reconciled and languages (Yoruba, Arabic, English, Spanish and Portuguese) co-exist. Instruments from a range of horizons come together. His connivance with jazz is borrowed from the music of pianists such as Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Chick Korea and Keith Jarrett and from the bop harmonies of Charlie Parker, the spiritualist threnodies of John Coltrane and above all from the highly personal style of Thelonious Monk. On stage every performer has his own profile and aura: Leandro Saint Hill’s fingers fly as he breathes life into his saxophone, the smiling giant double-bass player Childo Tomas, gives the music its structure, the percussionist Marque Gilmore seeks perfection on his drums, Joo Kraus introduces a note of understated emotion on his trumpet and Omar Sosa hammers out his music on his piano and his Fender Rhodes. Serenity and spirituality are key components in this quintet and are developed to the full: sometimes the music explodes and becomes delirious, taking possession of Sosa and dragging him into a dizzy whirl - a visionary in a frenzied dance. “Afreecanos”, a kaleidoscopic, open-ended concept dedicated to the gods of the Afro-Cuban Santeria religion and to the freedom of jazz, brings different cultures together in a new style of music imbued with benign spirituality. Programme of daytime concerts during the 37th festival From Wednesday afternoon till Sunday, four groups of jazz musicians will be playing in different venues in the streets of Souillac and in some nearby villages. Some of these groups hold great promise and there is every reason to believe that in a few years’ time they will be performing in major events. This is particularly true of the FDH (Free du hazard) trio for which we have great expectations. Others are more experienced and already have established careers. This is the case of Carlo Actis Dato and Enzo Rocco who will be playing as a duo. And then there will be new faces such as the whimsical Djacque le Notaire and les Guezmers who will be strolling around the town and Fresh Jazz, a guitar and saxophone duo who will be revisiting pop and gypsy or manouche music in a very refined and jazz-like manner. From Tuesday 5 to Saturday 9 June 2012: “Sim Copans at 100 in the Valley” In 2012 we are celebrating the Centenary of the birth of Sim Copans, one of the founders in 1976 of the Festival which has borne his name since 1985. Sim Copans is one of the main architects of the link between American and French culture. He translated the works of the French writer and poet Louis Aragon and introduced the United States to Jean Paul Sartre. He set up the Institute of American Studies and the Franklin Roosevelt Library in Paris and was instrumental in creating the first chair of the American language at the Sorbonne. As a public radio presenter from 1946 onwards he brought American music into French homes and over a 30-year period hosted no fewer than 4000 programmes including “Panorama of American jazz” and “Negro spirituals”. “Jazz in the Valley” – organised by the Association of the “Sim Copans” Souillac Jazz Festival as part of the local cultural programme of the Valley of the Dordogne in the Lot – will feature a creation entitled: “Sim Copans at 100 in the Valley” Performances will take place in Souillac on 5 June, Sousceyrac on 6 June, Cressensac on 7 June, Prudhomat on 8 June and Rocamadour on 9 June. “A disciplined extravaganza” is the catchword for this zany and virtuoso group of musicians and comedians who have combined their versatility and buffoonery in the cause of Universal Knowledge. Oozing competence and eccentricity, <a class='descriptif_a' alt='lien exterieur' target='_blank' href="FR/1,4_347_les_experts.html">Les Experts</a> address all sorts of historical and topical themes in their music, often outrageously mixing facts, controversy and ridicule, and deliberately making themselves a laughing stock in the process! They specialise in pavement lectures. After strolling around Souillac with “Répertoire à la Monk” a few years ago, Les Experts are back again, this time to perform in the concert hall in a tribute to Sim Copans whom they describe as a “jazz benefactor”. Soit je fais seulement des dessins auxquels j'ajoute ensuite de la couleur, soit je peins directement», précise-t-il. Les mots qu'il inscrit dans les marges, saisis à la volée des improvisations musicales, sont autant de clins d'oeil complices et malicieux. Né en 1956, Didier Locicero peint et dessine depuis plus de trente ans. Il présente une vision personnelle et originale de l'univers des clubs, des musiciens et des festivals de jazz. Depuis 2006, il consigne ses dessins, croquis, notes et peintures dans des carnets, qui restituent l'âme des lieux, la saveur et l'ambiance des soirées, le feeling des musiciens, leur relation au public. Après des études aux Beaux-Arts de Toulouse, il expose au cours des années 1980 dans le sud de la France et, depuis plusieurs années, il poursuit également un travail d'illustration et de réalisation de carnets de voyage. développement mise en place en partenariat avec les élus du territoire et le Conseil de développement dont l'Association pour le Festival de Jazz "Sim Copans" de Souillac est membre. La 4ème orientation de la charte : "Doter le pays d'une nouvelle approche culturelle" marque la volonté de contribuer au développement de la culture, en tant que vecteur social. Notre association a pris part à la rédaction du projet culturel autour de quatre grands axes : - Renforcer les relations entre les acteurs culturels, leurs productions et les habitants. - Favoriser la médiation culturelle à destination des publics ciblés. - Encourager les liens entre patrimoine et les autres champs culturels. - Accompagner les intercommunalités dans la mise en place de politiques culturelles. Il nous a paru essentiel de faire partie des premiers projets du Pays afin, comme aimait à le dire Sim Copans, de rapprocher deux des fleuves du jazz : le Mississippi et la Dordogne, et d'aller au devant des habitants en milieu rural. En 2011, Le Jazz dans la Vallée a présenté le spectacle de La Lanterne Sourde à Rocamadour, Saint-Céré, Martel, Carennac, Bretenoux et Sousceyrac. En 2012, à l'occasion du centenaire de la naissance de Sim Copans, Les Experts ont présenté une création "Sim Copans, 100 ans dans la vallée" à Souillac, Sousceyrac, Cressensac, Prudhomat et Rocamadour. De plus, les musicens sont intervenus dans les écoles de musique de Sousceyrac et Souillac pour une initiation au jazz.
